Diverse families

Families come in all shapes and sizes.

There is one thing that all strong families have in common: love

There are 33,714 same-sex couples in Australia, according to the 2011 Census, including 1338 who described their relationship as 'married'.

Discrimination against lesbian and gay Australians hurts all families.

Tasmania was the last Australian state to decriminalise homosexuality, but in August 2012 Tasmania's lower house became the first chamber of an Australian parliament to pass a bill to make same-sex marriage legal

According to recent national polling, conducted by Galaxy research:

  • 62% of Australians believe same-sex couples should be able to marry
  • 75% of Australians believe reform is inevitable
  • 78% believe there should be a conscience vote on the issue

What do you think?

Five years ago there were more than three thousand children in same-sex families in Australia.

Beautiful.
Hundreds of species practice cannibalism too, more than 1500 in fact. Should we really set our moral compasses by animals?
Thanks for your comment Jonno. Looking at the behaviour of animals is just one way we can think about issues but of course what humans think is pretty important too! Did you also see our other fact about public opinion towards marriage equality? In the last 7 years, support for marriage equality has almost doubled.
My taxes are paying for this?
Don't besmirch the heterosexual institution of marriage by using it to describe an abnormal and disgusting relationship.
Another terrific use of the government's money. I mean my money.
I cannot believe the truly unremarkable uses this government finds for taxpayer monies. Roll on to the next election when we can rid ourselves of the loony left.
"Sixty per cent of Australian support marriage equality"? Talk about double-speak! If I was asked about my support of "marriage equality," I'd indicate I support it to. Ask me if I support changing the definition of marriage, or if I support same-sex marriage, and you'll get a different answer.
Dear Commission, As a government agency is it not your job to assist in upholding the law of the land. You are tax funded public servants, it is not in my view, your job to spend your time proposing or defending positions that are not yet law. Nor to influence that process! Did you see the current polling as to how badly destroyed this current government will be by the electorate? Maybe you should consider looking for another job as hopefuly soon you will loose yours along with the rest of the monkeys in your department.
"These days" you have turned society on its head. No reputable study quotes 10% same sex figure. You say this for propaganda reasons only. The "real" figure is a fraction of this. The entire premise of your story is offensive and idealogical and is a hijacking of regular taxpayers money.
Well how refreshing to see so much common sense on this page - NOT from the Commission, of course - but from ordinary Australians who are as sick and tired of government money being wasted supporting a 2% minority. YES 2%, NOT 10%, Australian Longtitudinal Study of Health and Relationships, La Trobe University, (2005). Available at: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/alshr/wave1_2005.htm A statistic supported by ACON as recent as 2009 in their submission to the National Men’s Health Policy Consultations. RE Animals The homosexual lobby claim their relationships are NOT about sex, but love - Do animals love? NO, they're all about sex. Doesn’t that make the comment about the number of animal species who supposedly engaging in 'same-gender' sex irrelevant?
Fr John - The Parliament just conducted a survey of Australians on this issue. More than 276,000 people responded and 64% agreed "The law should be changed to legalise same sex marriages in Australia". You can find the report here http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House_of_Representatives_Committees?url=spla/bill marriage/report.htm
What is a Getup video doing on Aust Taxpayers website? This is an appalling waste of taxpayers money as you attempt to further "persuade" citizens to your way of thinking. Pushing blatant idealogical agenda's like yours using govt money is sickening.
64% 'of respondents' may have agreed. This is a classic example of Self Selection Bias.
Many thanks to all for the comments. Seems to be strongly opposed to homosexual marriage (though the heading was "Nine in ten transgender people experience discrimination. Three in ten experience physical violence") Anyway this is where it sent me. Seems Commission's facts don't seem to add up. If over the past 7 years the number of people who support equality in marriage has doubled then I am happy about it. About time both the husband and wife were considered equal. But, if he means homosexual marriage then why not say it and stop pussy footing around a totally different point. But I digress. Getting back to what he says. If that is a fact then could he explain why over 4 months there is not ONE other comment agreeing with him. I mean if 10% of the population is homosexual and 62% of people agree with homosexual marriage then I would have expected at least 6 of the 11 comments would be in favour of this. I have omitted the 2 comments by Commissioner as I believe them to be by the moderator. And, I always doubt Government surveys. The fact that 276,000 people were surveyed means nothing. If you want a true answer then call a referendum at the next election. Even with the brainwashing of our kids in schools I doubt the homosexual lobby could win.
Hate to be pedantic but the concept of this video is a direct rip off of The Prodigy's 'smack my bitch up.' Google it. If the gay lobby is so clever can they please come up with an original title for gay 'marriage' and then we'll support it OR stop continually using other peoples ideas.
If the majority of Australians are in favour of 'gay marriage', why do so many of your respondents feel ripped off by public servants using public funding to promote their point of view? Marriage, as an institution, belongs to the people. Any change to it, therefore should be made by referendum, not by a hung parliament manipulated by an aggressive minority. Let the people decide.
What has this site got against young cats that it has to censor the word??????
Self Selection is correct in saying the Parliamentary survey was self-selecting. However, according to a national Nielsen poll, in November 2011: 62% of Australians support legalising same-sex marriage.
Looks like you are fighting a losing battle commission. You have woken up the silent majority. They seem to be frustrated by the waste of public funds, I for one am entirely sick of you self righteous "progressives" using small sample polling to justify your wider assertions. A referendum would sort this once and for all. We could help fund it by shutting this department down in full.
What an attrocious waste of Taxpayer's money. Leave the lobbying to the lobby groups.
To all the ones claiming its a waste of your taxes, well gay people pay taxes too. I'm sure they wouldn't see it as wasteful. It astounds me to read so many comments from supposedly broad minded people against this whole debate. It seems its ok for gay couples to live like married couples with all the same recognitions and rights as heterosexuals so, in reality, they are living as though they are married but how dare we call it marriage. I have always believed Australians are homophobic but they claim not to be because 'its the rght thing to do" Thanks to all of you for proving me right. It seems we haven't really evolved out of the caves have we. Well I hope you all get down on your knees every day and night and give thanks to God that he didn't curse you with being born gay. Superiority feels good doesn't it. I challenge every one of you open minded individuals to experience what it is like to be gay in such an "accepting" society before you display your digust. But, you won't, because its so much more morally fulfilling being judgemental isn't it. And to think that my taxes went to help educate you.
Hello, kate here, just wanted to share my thoughts on your website, you've done a great job with your tips website, hope to come across more interesting ones cheers <a href="http://aboutradiologytechnician.com/">radiographer</a>

Marriage is between a man and a woman and while they are equal before God, maleness bad femaleness are not equal and you can't change the nature of marriage by using the catchword equality. The union of a man and a woman makes a new unit. Union and unit both mean one. Marriage breeds love but commitment feeds it and intensifies it.
